Childhood Education Certificate (Grades 1-6)
Teacher education programs in the School of Arts & Sciences emphasize the development of pure knowledge in subjects taught, pedagogical understanding, and professional competence. Program development is guided by standards established by national and state professional organizations, including the Interstate Teacher and Support Consortium (INTASC) and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). The program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
Coursework prepares students to teach using best practices that integrate the New York State and Common Core Learning Standards. Teacher candidates develop a sound understanding of the educational needs of students across the range of developmental levels. Course work and practical experiences in a variety of communities enable students to work effectively with diverse student populations, and school community members. Several of the education courses include extensive field work and experience and contact with local practitioners in classroom settings.
The Education Department, in collaboration with other departments in the School of Arts & Sciences and area schools, provides rigorous coursework leading to the initial New York State teacher certification. The School of Arts & Sciences requires an academic major along with the teacher certification program. The following are acceptable majors for candidates in the childhood education certification area: Art History, Biology, Chemistry, Communication Arts, Economics, English, French, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Mathematics, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology, and Spanish.

* Course requires students to complete 10 to 30 hours of fieldwork observing, assisting and/or teaching children in a school setting. The Childhood Education program requires a minimum of 100 hours of such fieldwork.
